The best way to get from Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport (MED) to Medina is by car. Hail a cab in front of the Arrivals hall, hire a taxi beforehand, or call yourself an Uber. The journey takes about 25 minutes. There is also a bus shuttle service that connects the airport to the city approximately every thirty minutes. If you get off at the final stop, you will find yourself within walking distance from Prophet's Mosque. The ticket should cost between 10-15 SAR per person, and the bus stop is located outside the terminal building.
Of course, the most major landmark in Medina and the pilgrim destination of many Saudis is Prophet's Mosque, the second mosque constructed by the Islamic Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE. The famous green dome marks Prophet's resting place, together with two of his companions, Abu Bakr and Umar. The mosque comprises multiple archeologically significant parts that can be used for prayer and worship, including the Rawdah (one of the Gardens of Paradise). The mosque's library contains valuable manuscripts and books about Islamic history. The Ottoman prayer hall is the oldest part of the mosque. The outer courtyard is shielded by umbrellas to protect pilgrims from the heat. Prophet's Mosque is open 24 hours a day and has enough space for over one million people.
A famous site of The Battle of Uhud in 625 CE, Mount Uhud is an important landmark located in the north of Medina. Once a battleground between pagans and Muslims, the site is now a significant tourist and pilgrim destination that offers spiritual enrichment, as well as breath-taking views of the surrounding area. Prophet Muhammad professed great love for the mountain – "This is Uhud, the mountain which loves us and which we love" – and many hadiths on the mountain reflect this. What's more, you can also visit the so-called Archers' Mountain, where Prophet's archers famously took position to fight their enemies, as well as the caves where Prophet took refuge. Visitors can pay their respects at Martyrs' Cemetery near Mount Uhud, where Prophet's soldiers are buried. Thanks to the mountain's high elevation – it's located over a thousand metres above sea level – visitors can also go rock climbing and hiking, as long as they are experienced or accompanied by a guide.
Dar Al Medina Museum is a must-visit for all who are interested in learning more about the ancient past. Situated in the Knowledge Economic City district, the museum displays over two thousand artifacts in as many as fourteen halls. It is run privately by Abdul-Aziz bin Abdul-Rahman bin Ibrahim Kaki. Learn about the history of Medina's citizens, the Hijrah Road, the city's architecture, and the evolution of Al-Masjid An Nebawi over the centuries. Discover rare manuscripts and model representations, soak in the history of Medina, and choose a tour in three different languages – Arabic, Urdu, and English. The entrance fee is 25 SAR per person.
The Quba Mosque, another important Islamic landmark, can be found on the outskirts of the city. Centuries ago, it was located in the village of Quba, about six kilometres from Medina. Prophet Muhammad is said to have spent fourteen days in the mosque during his journey from Mekka. According to the legend, the Quba Mosque is where Muhammad held the first Friday prayer. With six domes, four minarets, and walls made of white marble, the building has a contemporary and majestic appearance. About twenty thousand worshippers can visit at the same time and pray in the vast praying hall that runs around the courtyard. You can easily get to Quba Mosque from Prophet's Mosque on foot – all you have to do is take the designed walkway, which lets you traverse between the sites.
Al-Baqi Cemetery, or Jannat al-Baqi, is the first Islamic cemetery in Medina and the resting place of Prophet Muhammad's family and friends. Prophet himself chose Al-Baqi as the burial ground for his companion As'ad, as well as his daughters, son, and other companions. Al-Baqi Cemetery is one of the two holiest cemeteries in Islamic tradition, alongside Jannat al-Mu'alla. Millions of pilgrims visit every year.
