There is only one main passenger terminal at the airport, which makes it easy to find all facilities and arrange your preferred means of transportation.
At over three thousand metres above sea level, Jabal Sawda, also referred to as the Black Mountain, is considered the highest peak in Saudi Arabia. Many tourists visit Abha with the intention to hike up the mountain, and for a good reason – the views are spectacular. Once you’re at the top of Jabal Sawda, you can take a cable car to the heritage village of Rijal Almaa. If you choose this route, you are bound to enjoy a relaxing ride with views you won't forget.
Built in 1927, Shada Palace used to be the main residence of a former Saudi governor. It is a stunning representation of the Aseer region's architecture. Nowadays, the magnificent mud walls hide a rich museum, an ideal place to learn more about the province's history. See local household items, manuscripts, coins, and even photographs that bring you closer to the authentic lives of Abha citizens.
The Ottoman Bridge is a magnificent remnant of the Ottoman period, and many consider it to be the oldest bridge in all of Saudi Arabia. With its thick arches made of stone, the bridge offers a unique glimpse into the architecture of the ancient past. It is located between Adl Park and the Al Bastah neighbourhood.
Established in 1981, Aseer National Park is a must-see for anyone visiting Abha. The Black Mountain is only one of the many wonders you can discover in the park – be prepared for lush mountain sceneries, engulfing forests, unique flora, and a misty atmosphere. Don't forget to catch a glimpse of friendly baboons and various species of birds. It is possible to set up camp at a camping site if you're looking to spend a couple of days in nature.
Constructed on the side of a steep cliff, the Habala Hanging Village is an ancient site surrounded by towering mountains. Located in the Al Habala Valley, the village is easy to reach by car – it takes about an hour to get there from Abha, making it a great attraction on anyone's itinerary. It is believed the site used to be occupied by villagers who escaped the Ottomans, and it was only accessible via ropes. Explore the marvellous architecture, spend a few hours in nature, and walk in the shoes of lives gone by.
While Abha is rich in history and cultural heritage, the city also offers some modern tourist attractions you should not miss. You can marvel at the view from a distance or you can also take a cable car to reach the mountain during the day. Pay attention to which cable car network you choose; there are multiple cable cars in Abha.
Al Muftaha Village represents the artistic soul of Abha and the Aseer region. There is a mosque covered in inspiring calligraphy graffiti, as well as cultural centres such as Al Muftaha Theatre, King Fahd Cultural Center, or Archaeological Centre. In small art galleries, you get to discover the work of several artists, and various coffee shops offer a moment of respite after a long day of artistic discoveries. Walking down Art Street is a memorable experience for all art enthusiasts.
Forts are a characteristic feature of Abha, and Shamasan Fort is the perfect example. Built during the Ottoman Empire, the fort comprises several towers, a courtyard, and cannons that used to be fired at the end of the day during Ramadan.
